First sponsored in 2000 by American Tortoise Rescue, a nonprofit organization, the purpose of the day is to celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and bring attention to their disappearing habitats.

World Turtle Day is celebrated around the world in lots of different ways. Many schools have special lessons plans and craft projects to encourage learning and respect for turtles.
