President George Washington was the first President of the United States. He served from from April 30, 1789 to March 4, 1797. George Washington was born on February 22 (February 11, Old Style calendar), 1732 on the family's Pope's Creek Estate in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

He was the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army that defeated Great Britain in the American Revolutionary War. He played a large role in the steps leading to the Constitutional Covention in Philadelphia in 1787 and the ratification of the new Consitution

Known for his wisdom, courage and honesty there is a legendary childhood story about young George cutting down his father's cherry tree. When questioned, he was said to have replied "I cannot tell a lie."
