Nicknamed the “Old Line State”, the Free State, America in Miniature and Little America, Maryland is in the Mid-Atlantic region of the country. Some of its neighboring states are Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, DC and Delaware.

The capital of Maryland is Annapolis while the largest city is Baltimore. The name Maryland was derived from the queen of Charles I of England, Henrietta Maria. In honor of the queen who the state was named after, they have a state motto of “Fatti Maschii, parole femine”. This means manly deeds, gentle words.

The history of Maryland can be traced back to 1608, when Captain John Smith explored Chesapeake Bay. From then, there was an attempt by the British to capture Baltimore, but Maryland finally entered the Union on April 28, 1788.

Some of the famous landmarks in Maryland include Chesapeake Bay, the Annapolis US Naval Academy and Johns Hopkins University. The state is also dubbed as the sailing capital of the world.
