Labor day honors and celebrates the achievements of workers, labor unions and thier contribution to the Economy of the United States. The first labor day in the United States was celebrated in New York City on September 5, 1882.

Traditionally Labor day has been a symbol for the end of summer and the beginning of the school year. It is also the start of the football season. Labor Day is celebrated with picnics, barbecues and fireworks displays.

Many other countries celebrate Labor day on 1 May. In Australia and New Zealand labor day is also know as the Eight-Hour day and celebrates the granting of the eight hour working day.
