On December 7, 1787, Delaware became the first state to ratify the United States constitution. This is why it is given first position in national events like presidential inaugurations. Delaware is located in the mid-Atlantic region and is bordered by Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey. Its nicknames include the First State, the Blue Hen State, the Diamond State and the Small Wonder. Dover serves as the capital of Delaware while Wilmington is its largest city.

The name Delaware came from the Third Baron De La Warr who is Thomas West, the first colonial governor of Virginia. Delaware is home to the Holy Trinity Church, the oldest Protestant church in the US which was built in 1698. On the shores of Delaware, horseshoe crabs can be seen during the month of May. These crabs can survive up to a year without eating, and they look exactly as they had since the time of the dinosaurs.
