Nicknamed ‘The Centennial State’, Colorado is a western state in the region of the US called the Rocky Mountains. It is home to Mt. Elbert as well as some of the highest peaks in the North American Rockies. As a collective state, the motto of Colorado is ‘Nil sine numine’ which means ‘Nothing without providence’.

Denver is the capital and largest city in Colorado, which incidentally ranks eighth in total land area in the entire US. The nickname Centennial State was given to Colorado because it officially became a state of the US during the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

As early as the 1500s, Colorado was visited by Spanish explorers. Juan de Ulibarri claimed the territory in behalf of Spain in 1706. It was in 1803 that the United States obtained eastern Colorado as part of the Louisiana Purchase.
