California is nicknamed the Golden State because of its almost year-round sunny weather. It officially became a state on September 9, 1850. Before that, California was home to a diverse native population of up to 300,000. Some of the Native American groups who inhabited California are the Yuma people, as well as the Paiute, Maidu, Hupa and Pomo tribes.

One of the most famous landmarks in California is the Golden Gate Bridge. It is home to Hollywood movies; ten national parks; 18 national forests; and 278 beaches and state parks. California is also the birthplace of Barbie dolls, video arcade games, skateboards and Frisbee.
